Open-source Git hosting · Built on Forgejo · A Taskuler project

Open-source Git hosting where contributors get paid task by task.

Taskuler Forge is open-source Git hosting built on Forgejo. Contributors will be paid through Taskuler-funded tasks: Taskuler backers stake TSW on the tasks they want done, and the builder of each funded task is paid from escrow once the work is accepted.

Not live yet. Task funding starts once Taskuler's TSW staking (Taskuler Phase 2) is live. Until then Taskuler Forge is bootstrapped, and no contributor payments are being made.

  • Paid per task, not from a revenue share
  • Backers choose what gets funded with TSW
  • Disputes go to Kleros arbitration

How it works

Three steps from a task to a paid builder

  1. Host your code on a real forge

Taskuler Forge is a full Git platform built on Forgejo, with repositories, pull requests, issues, CI, package registries and wikis. You can use the hosted service, or self-host it for free.

  2. Backers fund the tasks they want done

Taskuler Forge is a Taskuler project. Backers stake TSW (Taskuler Stake Weight) on the project, propose tasks and push their stake onto the tasks that matter most. Tasks with TSW pushed onto them are funded from Taskuler's Treasury, in priority order. Tasks nobody backs aren't funded.

  3. Builders are paid per task

Funded tasks are posted as jobs on the Taskuler Market. Builders bid, backers' TSW votes choose the builder, and the bounty is held in escrow. The builder is paid once the work is accepted after an audit hold.

Where the money comes from

Contributors are paid through Taskuler-funded tasks.

Funded by TSW

Each funding period, Taskuler's Treasury splits a funding pot among Taskuler projects in proportion to the TSW staked on each one. Within a project, tasks are funded in full, in order of the TSW pushed onto them, until that period's funding runs out.

TSW is earned by staking TSKR, and it can't be bought, sold or transferred.

Paid through escrow

Each funded task is a Taskuler Market job. Its bounty is held by escrow smart contracts until the work is accepted, a ruling is made or a timeout releases it. The proposer sets a maximum bounty in the task's spec, and builders can bid lower.

No separate payout system

Taskuler Forge doesn't run its own contributor payouts. Getting paid works the same way as on any other Taskuler project.

Fair, checkable work

The rules for getting paid are public

Payment follows Taskuler's rules, which anyone can read in the code. Specs are written up front, and work is checked before money moves.

How work is accepted

  • Clear specs. Proposers write each task's spec, as tests where possible, and specs can be challenged.
  • Audit hold. Delivered work is accepted after an audit hold, unless the task's backers object.
  • No self-acceptance. The builder, and anyone who bid on the task, can't accept their own work.
  • Work History. Completed jobs are recorded on chain, with badges.

When something goes wrong

Objections
Backers can object to delivered work. Outsiders can challenge it by posting a bond.
Arbitration
Disputes go to Kleros, and the builder can win. Either side can appeal.
Random audits
Large tasks and tasks backed mostly by their own proposer get a longer hold and more random audits.
Timeouts
Anyone can trigger an escrow timeout, so payment never depends on a website staying online.

Cred is an information-only reputation score: a public record of who did checked work. Backers of Taskuler tasks can use it when choosing builders. Cred never converts to money.

For maintainers and orgs

A forge for your code. Tasks for the work you want funded.

For maintainers and contributors

  • Host public projects on a Forgejo-based forge, or self-host it for free.
  • Pick up funded tasks as a builder, and get paid when your work is accepted.
  • Back the project with TSW to propose tasks and push your stake onto the ones that matter.

For organisations

  • Private repos, teams and CI. SSO, audit logs and dedicated instances are available on paid plans.
  • Hosted on Taskuler Infra (formerly Ourcld).

Where things stand

Honest about timing

Task funding needs Taskuler's TSW staking, which ships in Taskuler Phase 2. Until it's live, there's no way to pay Taskuler Forge contributors, and Taskuler Forge is bootstrapped, as it is today.

Until TSW is liveBootstrappedGrants are welcome.

  • Now: Taskuler Forge is bootstrapped, grants are welcome, and its first tasks are proposed, not funded.
  • Taskuler Phase 2: TSW staking goes live, and backers can fund Taskuler Forge's tasks.
  • Then: funded tasks are posted as Taskuler Market jobs, and builders are paid from escrow.

FAQ

Questions, answered honestly

Is Taskuler Forge open source?

Yes. Taskuler Forge is built on Forgejo, which is community-governed and lightweight, and the core is open. Self-hosting is free. The hosted service adds convenience and reliability.

How do contributors get paid?

Through Taskuler-funded tasks. Backers stake TSW on the tasks they want done, funded tasks are posted as Taskuler Market jobs, and the builder is paid from escrow once the work is accepted.

When does payment start?

Once Taskuler's TSW staking (Taskuler Phase 2) is live. Until then, no contributor payments are being made.

How much does a task pay?

Each task has its own bounty. The proposer sets a maximum in the task's spec, and builders can bid lower. There's no monthly pool or revenue share.

What are contributors paid in?

Contributors are paid from escrow in the job's currency (TSKR or USDC) through Taskuler.

What happened to the revenue-share promise?

We previously promised 30% of seat revenue to contributors; we dropped that in favor of paying contributors through Taskuler-funded tasks.

Is my private code safe?

Private repos stay private. Tasks and their specs are public, so don't put private code in a task.

Where is it hosted?

On Taskuler Infra, a distributed hosting platform. Git and database data live in Postgres and S3-compatible storage.

Why the new name?

MeritForge is now Taskuler Forge, a Taskuler project. This site is now at forge.taskuler.com.
